Self and Other
with Ian Olasov
In this workshop we will ask who we are, and will explore how we are shaped by the other people in our lives. We’ll talk about the ancient metaphysical question of what makes you today the same person as you at age 2. We’ll talk about whether you have a deep self, and if so, how you can find it. We’ll talk about how you are shaped by your relationships with other people, and how you are shaped by the categories that society allows you to fit into. We will consider the reasoning of historical and contemporary thinkers, and use it to shape how we reason about these questions today.
